If you have a nail fungus, it’s okay!  Barefoot can help.

You might not like the way your nails look or feel but treatments are available so let’s talk about what we can do together to improve how your nails look. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the population is affected by nail fungus, so the bottom line is…. you’re not alone and Barefoot Medical Spa has solutions that can help!

Fungal nail infections are common, usually affecting the toenail that causes the nail to become discolored, thick, brittle and often giving the nail a crumbly appearance. These can often cause pain or discomfort and can make us self-conscious about our feet. The medical terms for a fungal nail infection is onychomycosis.

How does someone get a fungal nail infection? Fungal nail infections can be caused by many different types of fungi (yeasts or molds) that live in the environment. You just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, as small cracks in your nail or the surrounding skin can allow these germs to enter your nail and cause an infection.

Who is affected by fungal nails?  Anyone can get a fungal nail infection, at any age. Those with chronic athletes’ foot, feet that spend a lot of time in socks and shoes, those with a weakened immune system, previous trauma to a nail, decreased circulation, diabetes, those that are older – are more likely to be affected.

How is a fungal nail diagnosed?  The only definitive way a nail is diagnosed as fungal is to take a nail clipping and send it to a laboratory for a fungal culture.  It is critical that this step is taken before a course of treatment begins. A traumatic nail or a nail infected with bacteria can often look like a fungal nail and treatment options for those are different!  At Barefoot, our service includes a lab test and if confirmed, we offer various treatment options.

How are fungal nails treated? With a lot of patience! Since it takes 9-12 months for a toenail to grow out from the nail matrix, it will take time before an improvement of the nail is noticed. There are multiple treatment options for fungal nails, but for many, there is not an everlasting, definitive cure.  At Barefoot we provide customized treatment plan to attack the fungus at many levels which can improve the outcome and help you feel better and have your nails look better while under our program.

Treatment options such as a revolutionary painless laser, topical nail medication that is only available through a physician, topical medication to treat the surrounding skin, and innovative ways to rid the fungus in shoe gear.

At Barefoot, we welcome those who are affected by fungal nails.  We are a judgement free spa, so please don’t feel embarrassed to make an appointment with Dr. Julie in a private treatment room.  Education is key to a successful outcome, and that’s just what the first step will be. We will work together to ensure that you have all of the facts so that we develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
